Cowlitz

             The Cowlitz were a Northwest Indian tribe. The Cowlitz were divided into two parts. The Upper Cowlitz and the Lower Cowiltz. Even though they are the same tribe they are different in many ways. Still they are also very similar. Here are some ways the Cowlitz lived.                                                                       

               The Lower Cowlitz had many more peoples in their area. They inhabited 30 villages by the Cowlitz River and about a mile from the Colombia River. The Upper Cowlitzs did not have as many peoples as the Lower Cowlitz, but they did have warm weather. They would camp in warm area right along the Tieton River.                                                                                                                                                                                         Even so that Upper Cowlitz had warm weather they also had winter, so did the Lower Cowlitz. The Cowlitz would live in long houses right by fish filled streams. They believed that when they would storytell and have ceremonies they would be filled with warmth even though it was cold. They also did dances and songs which would give food and would avoid them from evil.                                                                                                                                                                                              When the warm weather moved in and it was spring the Cowlitz knew what to do. The Cowlitz would harvest wapato, an Indian potato. They would also harvest camas bulbs to satisfy their diet. Also during the spring they would  go up to the mountains and harvest berries. In addition to all of this they would have a food gathering ceremony.                                                                                                                                                                              The Cowlitz would mostly eat fish and their harvested crops from the spring and summer. Their harvest would include the wapato and camas bulbs. They would also have their berries from the spring. The Cowlitz could get fish all year round. They got their fish so easily cause they would build their houses by streams and rivers.                                                                                                                                                                                              The Cowlizts had their tribe in the Eastern and Western area. The Lower Cowlitzs had their tribes in the Western area and the Upper  Cowlitzs had their people in the Eastern area of Washington . The different sections of the tribe were peaceful and friendly. If one passes the other they didn't mind. They were usually happy to see some of the other peoples from their tribe.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               The Cowlitz did many types of dances and many types of entertainment. Like I said earlier  they did gartherings, dances to avoid evil and live though the harsh winters. When they had food gaerings they would share the food they had.  In the dances they would dance to be closer to good then to be closer to evil.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The Cowlitz were remembered for their baskets. It was their culture. Their baskets would sometimes be made with coil or stuff like that.Their baskets had strong and bold desines. Their baskets are also made out of bear and also grass. They made many basket in their free time. Mostly the girls would make them.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               The Cowlitz are a very peaful and are a very considerent tribe. Even though they have to diffrent tribe secshons they get along preety well. Also their tribe is very PEACHY!
